Two lower leg bones from wild turkey gobblers. The one on the left comes from an ancient time when horses, bison, giant sloths, mammoths, and mastodons lived in Florida. The protruding bones in the middle are the sharp spurs.

This nature school was always in session, so what would they learn next?

CHAPTER 10

The Joy of New Discoveries

CHECKING THE EDGES

AS THE TURKEYS got bigger and stronger, they could take walks of five miles or more. If the weather was good, they might be out for the entire day. But on Sunday, July 28, it was hot and humid. Turkey Boy walked around with one eye closed. Joe thought it was possibly from an injury and watched his favorite jake carefully. Later both eyes were open again as the problem resolved on its own.

They finally got out for a walk at three in the afternoon and headed for an area that had more than one type of environment. It was between Bert’s Branch and the east side of an old field. One section was a forest of longleaf pines. Another area was covered with lichens. Another had oak and other hardwood trees. Above and below that were two swamps. One had wild azalea and gallberry; the other had titi and viburnum.
